The 2016 UK Formation Championships were a milestone in the history of XS Latin; for the very first time, the club fielded three teams. This competition marked the debut of XS Latin C team, who performed their new routine, Toccata, alongside XS A and B.
As the first team to perform in the adult 6-8 couple competition, the C team were very excited to take to the comp floor and danced with infectious delight. The team is very young, having formed only this year; indeed, five members of the team had not danced a step of ballroom or latin before October 2015. In their new polka-dot costumes, they gave a great inaugural performance that the rest of the club was extremely proud to watch.
The Toccata routine also represents another first for XS Latin; it is the only XS Latin music that has ever been mixed without lyrics. It is a tribute to the beautiful violin music of Vanessa Mae, and named after the routine’s opening number, ‘Toccata and Fugue in D Minor’.
The UK Championship once again proved to be a good end to the season for the XS A and B teams. Both teams had line-up changes since the British Open Championships in Blackpool only two weeks previously, including three dancers making their formation debut.
The A team drew second, and gave a more powerful performance of their new Wicked choreography than they had done in Blackpool. The B team proved again their ability to give increasingly consistent, clean and sharp performances. Both teams retained their first and second place trophies without a challenge, and were pleased to support this competition, organised by Jason & Shemayne Parkinson and Mark & Jayne Shutlar and held in the attractive Kings Hall, Stoke-on-Trent for the third year running.
Juvenile and Junior teams from Dance Crazy, Dance with Passion, Latin Steps, Starlite and Zig Zag all competed at this friendly and supportive competition, with Dance Crazy teams impressively dominating every event. For the second year, the Championships also saw a 4 couple Adult Championship, which was won by the sole entrants, Dance With Passion Immortal Team, based on Michael Jackson numbers.
XS Latin A team are proud to retain their UK Championship title for the sixth year in succession, and the club now looks forward to the winter season.
